“Introduction to Chair Caning” with Doug Lowman
TIME: Thursday, January 22nd, 1:00 – 4:00 pm
Do you have an antique chair from a beloved relative with a broken caned seat that you would
love to have back in service in your home, but think that caning a chair is too difficult? Here is a
workshop just for you to experience the artistry of seat weaving. In this 1/2-day workshop (1 pm
– 4 pm), you will learn to weave the Appalachian traditional 7-step method on a wooden form.
Lessons learned in the workshop provide you with the skills to weave a square or rectangular
seat in a chair or stool. When you decide you like seat weaving and wish to expand your
knowledge of seat weaving techniques, longer classes on your chair or stool are available.
The instructor will provide the square form, 2.5-mm cane, and all needed tools. Moderate hand strength and no recent shoulder, arm, or hand injuries are recommended.
Total cost (including materials) is $15. Open to up to 10 participants.
